An adaptive distance protection scheme in the presence of phase shifting transformer
نویسنده
چکیده
Distance relays detect transmission line faults and their locations by measuring the voltage and the current signals. Also, phase shifting transformers (PSTs) are used to control the power flow in electrical power systems. PSTs protect transmission lines from thermal overloading, improve the stability of transmission system and control the power flow between different networks. Unfortunately, existence of PST in a transmission line vitiates the operation of protection relays by altering the voltage and current signals. In this paper, the effects of the delta–hexagonal PST on the operation of distance relays are investigated by both analytical and computational methods under different fault types and locations. Results of investigations reveal that the PST causes the distance relays to under-reach. Finally, a feasible method for eliminating the PST detrimental effects on the operation of the distance relays is presented. This method uses the voltage difference between the PST terminals to modify the operation of the distance relays. The phasor measurement units (PMUs) are used to calculate this voltage and remote signal systems are used to transfer it to the system protection center (SPC). All the simulations are conducted with electro-magnetic transient program (EMTPWorks). © 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Zone-3 Impadance Reach Setting of Distance Relays by Including In-feed Current Effects in an Adaptive Scheme
The undesired operation of zone 3 may be one of the most conspicuous protective relay features due to the incorrect zone 3 relay operations which have been conducive to the severity of blackouts. Therefore, determining the accurate zone 3 setting of the distance relay is deemed to be necessary. This paper focuses on the development of a new technique for calculating zone-3 setting of distance r...

The aim of this paper is to extend a hybrid protection plan for Power Transformer (PT) based on MRA-KSIR-SSVM. This paper offers a new scheme for protection of power transformers to distinguish internal faults from inrush currents. Some significant characteristics of differential currents in the real PT operating circumstances are extracted. In this paper, Multi Resolution Analysis (MRA) is use...
متن کاملA Novel Flux-Based Protection Scheme for Power Transformers
Internal Turn-Turn faults (TTF) are the most common failures in power transformers, which could seriously reduce their life expectancy. Although common protection schemes such as current-baseddifferential protection are able to detect some of the internal faults, some other minor ones (such as TTFs andshort circuit near the neutral point) cannot be detected by such schemes. Likewise, these rela...

The change in the topology of active distribution networks (ADNs) is one of the essential challenges that might affect the protection schemes. The conventional protection schemes based on base topology result in some coordination constraint violations in other topologies due to the outage of upstream substations and distributed generation units. In this article, new combinational and adaptive p...
